Tom Saeger Land Preserve

The "Tom Saeger Land Preserve" has been created by the Hunterdon Land Trust Association with help from our partners the NJ State Green Acres, the Phillipsburg Riverview Organization, Hunterdon County, Holland Township, and the Victoria Foundation.
The property has been in the Saeger family for generations and the nieces and nephews of Thomas A. Saeger were happy to honor his wishes by permanently protecting the land. Thomas Saeger lived in the Ironbound section of Newark, NJ for most of his life, running the family business, a tavern called Murphy's. He frequently visited family in Hunterdon County and after serving in WWII he purchased 113 acres in the county. Saeger loved the area and annually brought busloads of city children out to the property to enjoy the fresh air and country living. His nieces and nephews have fond memories of swimming and fishing in the pond, picnicking on the hill and walking in the woods and camping at the pavilion area. By protecting the property, we have ensured that future generations will continue to enjoy the outdoors on the Saeger Preserve.
The creation of the Saeger Preserve helps to protect important forest and farm land which will in turn protect the purity of the Milford Creek, and ultimately the Delaware River. The preserve is particularly important to local conservation goals as it is located next to two other preserved properties, and together the three form an unbroken 150+ acre protected area. |
