Martin Woods

The Hunterdon Land Trust Alliance (HLTA) helped to protect this serene 24-acre Hunterdon woodland in 2001. The forested land is located close to the already preserved Kugler Woods, and contains a magnificent timber stand of Virginia Pine, Eastern Cedar, and mixed hardwoods.
The land was protected through a permanent conservation easement purchased with funding from the New Jersey Green Acres Program.
A public pathway runs along the edge of the property and will eventually be connected to Kugler Woods and other preserved land. HLTA has responsibility for monitoring the easement.
When Marguerite Martin and her husband bought the land in 1951, there was no running water, no heat and no kitchen sink. They started a chicken farm and made a home in the old farmhouse.
Mrs. Martin explains that she decided to preserve her land because, "I'm conscious of the fact that houses are just coming up everywhere. It's just one housing development after another. I'd like to see this property just stay the way it is. I've loved it and I don't want to see it changed." |
